A lot of the challenges the District faces regarding health on the policy side are due to workforce shortages.
As Chair for the Committee on Health being able to meet with current @GWtweets PA students and participants of GW’s newest Residency Fellowship in Health Policy cohort and witnessing their earnestness gives me hope that more health professionals will not only stay in DC, but will also get licensed here and practice here.
Hearing prep during this morning’s commute via metro. This morning, at 9:30am, the Committee on Health will hold an oversight roundtable on financial challenges at the Dept. of Behavioral Health.
Starting off #WeekWithoutDriving on the orange line. It’s great to see the array of people taking alternative forms of transportation and being car free!
DC offers several options of transportation that can get you wherever you need to be. I encourage you to join the cause this week and go car free!
There are currently 12 Business Improvements Districts in DC. Today, I met with @GoldenTriDC Executive Director Leona Agouridis and toured the 172-block-area that stretches from Dupont Circle to Pennsylvania Avenue.
Together we surveyed the area and discussed organizational priorities.
Yesterday, I joined the @dcpcsb School Board Fall Charter Leaders Meeting for their panel, “Meeting the Moment: Clarity, Partnership, and Progress for DC Students” exploring what DC’s shifting political and economic landscape means for the future of public education.
I also got a head start on #WeekWithoutDriving! @wmata

ICYMI -- The yearly scramble to get that DC Health form filled out and submitted? @CMCHenderson is hoping to make it a little of a pain. @ben_brasch has details: https://t.co/p7fihRcD1c
There’s a chill in the air and fall is officially underway. 🍂 🍁 🍃
This week the Committee on Health held a hearing on three bills on vaccines and student health forms, followed by an oversight roundtable on CNAs.
How do we improve affordability while maintaining access to high quality health care?
A well timed conversation today at the John Hopkins Bloomberg Center with the @dcchamber for the 2026 State of the District and Region Conference’s panel on “The Cost of Care: Advancing Affordability Through Economics, Policy, and Innovation”.
Imagine — the city is facing a workforce crisis in terms of long term care, so we establish programs to train folks as Certified Nurse Aides.
To build the pipeline, we’ve gone so far as to offer the certification to high school students through our Advanced Technical Centers.
Oh. After the hearing in the bills, we have an oversight roundtable on a matter than has 2 agencies — DC Health & OSSE — finger pointing at each other on who is to blame.
Best way to resolve?
Bring everyone in for a hearing because we’re all tired.
In pre-hearing prep, we asked DC Health how many universal health certificates were submitted during SY25-26.
They reported 10%.
Well now, that makes absolutely no sense considering DCPS and charter schools require the form upon enrolling your child in school.
In less than an hour the Committee on Health will be holding a hearing on three bills concerning student health followed by a roundtable at 2:30pm on the CNA workforce shortage.
