Florida – what on earth happened these past two days!? The state saw 2.8 TRILLION gallons of rain. Most was focused in a few small areas – like in Brevard County, where up to two feet fell. This was largely unforecast, with only a "marginal" or "slight" risk of flooding advertised.
The clockwise-spinning Bermuda high over the Atlantic pushed Bahama moisture westward for about 48 hours, leading to a saturated environment. What was unclear was if there would be any "forcing", or a trigger, to squeeze that moisture out of the air.
In the end, a very weak surface trough, or diffuse strip of low pressure, was present in eastern Florida. That's what focused the downpours for a full day's time.
More importantly, winds aloft were weak, meaning there was nothing to scoot the downpours along. Instead, they lingered while being fed a nonstop moist easterly fetch.
Moreover, a subtle upper-air disturbance was just enough to help those downpours overachieve. In some places, the results were disastrous.
I don't see how anyone can claim that Trump undertook massive deregulation, in light of his across-the-board tariffs that he insists on, to this day. How is that deregulation? That's micro-management of the free market!
One of the biggest reasons to hope for the Republicans getting a bloodbath tomorrow is to firmly establish the lesson that tariffs are a huge political loser that no politician should even think about leaning into.
Nathalia Gadelha Filgueiras was truly destined to become a great aviator. Just last year, she was already performing aerobatic manoeuvres in a Cessna 150 Aerobat, an aircraft certified for aerobatic flight.
Gone far too soon. Keep riding with the angels, Nathalia.
My heart goes out to the families of those aboard N722BD. Volumetric radar data show the jet descending from about 37,000 ft near a deep thunderstorm, with tops near 46,000 ft, close to West Palm Beach around 12:48 PM. The last ADS-B report came about 75 seconds later. Weather may have been a factor, but the NTSB will determine the cause. The radar numbers come from my 3D grid of the 12:45 PM scan, averaged over about a 10 km box around where the descent started. The radar is about 120 km away at that point, so the beam is wide up there, and the scan is 2½ minutes before the descent. That’s why the caption says “near” and “possible” rather than claiming the plane flew through a specific core.
Absolutely devastating floods today in Brevard County, FL.
Expected a simple rainy Monday, not to be woken up at 4am with an emergency flash flood emergency warning and 20+ inches of rain over 12 hours.
We were lucky with no damage, but my buddy nearby was not...
If Atlas nails 2026 after nailing 2024 they will officially become the gold standard pollster in American politics.
They were freakishly accurate in almost every President state contest (talking within 1 point in almost every state).
In TX they pegged Cruz at +7 (he won by 8.5).
There does not seem to be any notable political bias either…
With control of Congress at stake, President Donald Trump's final message on the eve of the midterms devoted over 20 minutes to showing DC renovations before a mention of the upcoming elections. https://t.co/V3uGAIaa0h
