THE BIG ONE
The game checks for a contest twice: when you go up for the shot, and when the ball leaves your hand. Whichever is worse for you counts the most. So if a defender is on you when you go up, it's still a contest after he runs by or backs off. That's a ghost contest.

HOW CLOSE
When you go up: he counts within 7 feet, fully inside 4.
At the release: his body or raised arm has to be within 5 feet of the ball, fully inside 3.5.
Farther than that, he adds nothing.

WHERE HE IS
In front of you or beside you counts. Behind you counts for nothing, even if he's touching you. A defender turned away from you loses most of his contest.

HANDS UP
A real contest (contest stick, a jump, hands-up movement, or a reach) is about 60 to 70% stronger than standing there with hands down.

RUN-BYS
A run-by works because of that first check. What matters is whether your hands are up at the moment he goes up. Hands up = Light Contest. Hands down, just running = Bothered. Running straight at him counts way more than running across him.

PUMP FAKES
A defender in the air counts in full, even while he's coming down. He only stops counting once his feet hit the floor, and then he's worth nothing for about half a second. So don't shoot while he's falling. Wait for him to land, then go up right away.

CHALLENGER
It makes your contest stronger: 5% Bronze, 10% Silver, 15% Gold, 20% HOF, 25% Legend. It only works on jump shots from 10 feet out, when you're in front of the shooter, within 6 feet, with your hands up. Hands down or behind him = nothing.

DEADEYE
It cuts the contest at the release: 5, 10, 18, 28 or 40% by tier. It helps most against a defender who gets there late. Against a defender who was set in front of you the whole time, it only helps a little.

REACHING
A reach counts as a contest while it's happening. If your reach is still going when he goes up, he gets contested. If it already ended, or it pulled you past him, it reads open.

DEFENDERS STACK
Each defender gets his own score and they're added up. Two guys a little close can equal one real contest. A 99 Perimeter Defense contests about 65% harder than a 60.

THE WORD ON SCREEN
It's a range, not a number. Two shots that both say "Light Contest" can be very different. For an 85 three in Rec, the low end of Light is about a 25% make on a non-green and the high end is about 17%.

WHAT DOESN'T CAUSE IT
Lag: online, every console runs the same game off everyone's button presses, so lag can't invent a contest. It just delays inputs.
Hot streaks: they shrink your green window on contested shots, but they don't change the word. Oct 1 made that a little weaker.
