Spooky October night. Bing Crosby is singing “The Headless Horseman” in Walt Disney’s The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad from 1949, and the whole den still feels like it did back then.
Released October 5, 1949, the Ichabod half of that package film is Bing narrating and voicing Brom Bones as he lays out the local tall tale at the Van Tassel party. The song hits with that easy Crosby swing and the chorus warning you can’t reason with a headless man, right before the animation turns the woods dark and the pumpkin-headed rider comes through. For a lot of monster kids it was the first time a Disney cartoon leaned all the way into something that actually felt scary instead of just cartoon-spooky.
Ever since I was a little monster kid in the early ’80s I would catch it again on the Disney Channel, parked in the family den with the lights low and a big bowl of Count Chocula or Franken Berry slowly turning to sugar milk. The wood paneling, the warm CRT glow, the cereal box still sitting on the coffee table. That sequence always flipped the switch into Halloween mode before the leaves were even done turning. Same bowl, same song, same headless rider cutting through the trees. Still works.
27 days out and the porch light is on. Queue the 1949 segment, kill the overheads, and let Bing do the rest. 🎃🍂🍫
