How is it possible that banned digital lenders are still accessible in online app stores and what does this say about CBK's oversight and regulatory framework?
"Hi Nyakundi, please hide my ID. Kindly expose this rogue digital lender called Chapaa Loan. Weren't they banned? (https://t.co/vNvX2tyt3Q) They lend money then two days before the due date, they bombard you with rude and insulting messages demanding payment.Their customer care team, particularly the ladies are extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. While their exorbitant charges are already a concern the real issue is the offensive nature of the texts and calls even before the payment is due. Please help highlight this issue. Here is an example of the kinds of texts they send."
Predatory lending apps in Kenya continue to exploit gaps in digital finance, converting the promise of instant liquidity into a cycle of compounding charges and psychological strain that is overwhelming borrowers and eroding trust in mobile credit markets.
In the latest case, a borrower who sought what seemed like a manageable loan from Chapaa Loan mobile app now says he is being relentlessly drained by high interest, subjected to threats over delayed repayments and pushed into a state of constant anxiety that has disrupted his peace of mind.
"Hello Cyprian. There is a mobile loan app called CHAPAA LOAN by CERES LIMITED. It has been charging me a lot of interest. For a loan of 39k, I pay interest of 9,230 weekly. It has drained me since Feb 2025. Any time I plan to pay the loan in bits so that I finish, they threaten sending emails to my employer. I never mentioned my employer anywhere in my details. In a month, I pay interest equivalent to the principal amount. I have no peace. Kindly assist so that they can stop bullying me. I'm really depressed and giving up in life because of them."
