I thank the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for reaffirming Somalia’s longstanding position on the Republic of Cyprus.

The clarification responds directly to an August 17 social media post by the recently installed Parliament Speaker, Abdulkadir Mohamed Nur. In the post, he thanked Turkish Cypriot assembly leader Ziya Öztürkler for congratulating him on his election and referred to him as the speaker of the assembly of the “Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.”

Northern Cyprus is recognized as an independent state solely by Turkey.

Swedish MP Markus Wiechel of the Sweden Democrats declared: “There are two parties in the Swedish Parliament that recognise the Republic of Somaliland: the Christian Democrats and the Sweden Democrats. We will pave the way for more recognition. Vote yellow and blue on 13 September.”

In this statement, the MP presents the recognition of Somaliland — an act that amounts to the dismemberment of the Somali state — as a central plank of his foreign policy platform while campaigning for votes in Sweden’s general election on 13 September 2026.

This is yet another World Bank-funded project in Somalia. World Bank projects in the country continue to suffer from a serious lack of accountability, transparency, and effective scrutiny by the relevant federal and local oversight institutions. As a result, significant portions of the funds allocated for these projects ultimately end up in the pockets of private contractors and corrupt politicians.

Somalia’s auditor general has flagged unverified expenditures in World Bank programs like Baxnaano cash transfers, persistent gaps in procurement, implementation, and domestic revenue tracking. ​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​​

This evening in Mogadishu, Hamsa Abdi Barre urged members of Parliament to create TikTok accounts and become active on the platform, noting that the “newly elected Speaker of the House” - widely known as TikTok - is already a prominent figure on TikTok.

In an official press release dated 13 August 2026, the Puntland government has accused Federal President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud of orchestrating a plot to incite conflict in Gaalkacyo between Puntland and Galmudug.

Puntland states that it has obtained intelligence indicating a conspiracy by the federal government to provoke clashes in the divided city. It calls on local residents, Galmudug authorities, and its own defence forces to remain vigilant and uphold peace.

The statement further urges the Somali public and the international community to hold the federal leadership accountable for any actions that risk escalating tensions along the Puntland–Galmudug border.
