Before the sun rose this morning, thousands of members of the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) gathered along EDSA for what police described as an emergency rally, bringing traffic to a crawl during the morning rush hour. Police estimated around 7,000 people had assembled near the People Power Monument by 7 a.m. While participants called for transparency and accountability in government, the INC later confirmed the gathering also opposed the planned filing of a plunder case against Senator Rodante Marcoleta.
The Office of the Ombudsman is set to file a plunder case before the Sandiganbayan this week against Marcoleta, former lawmaker @MikeDefensor, and two other respondents over the alleged non-disclosure of ₱75 million in campaign donations during the 2025 elections. Ombudsman investigators also recommended additional charges against Marcoleta, although Ombudsman @BoyingRemulla31 has yet to confirm whether all will be included in the filing.
Responding to the case, Marcoleta said he finds it difficult to understand why he is facing prosecution despite his calls for transparency and accountability in the alleged flood control controversy. He argued that former House Speaker @SpeakerMartinPH, whom he has repeatedly sought to subject to Senate scrutiny, has yet to receive the same level of public and legal scrutiny. Marcoleta also pointed out that a complaint against Romualdez has remained pending since April, saying that while the case against him has rapidly progressed, the complaint and allegations against Romualdez have yet to see comparable action. He maintained that authorities should focus on fully investigating those he believes are responsible for the alleged flood control irregularities.
The INC echoed that position, saying it opposes the planned case against Marcoleta because it believes legal action should not overshadow efforts to uncover the truth behind the alleged flood control controversy. The church maintained that accountability and transparency should apply equally to everyone involved, arguing that the pursuit of justice must continue alongside efforts to fully investigate the broader allegations of corruption.
Hahahaha.”
