Computer Science lecturer at @AberdeenUni. Formerly @Cambridge_Uni, @UnivOfStAndrews & @DundeeUni. Interested in HCI, ML/AI, and societal issues of tech.
Aberdeen CS is hiring two (senior) lecturers! These are Teaching and Scholarship positions, so focused on teaching, not research

I now have a new appreciation for every single university module that I've ever sat in on. The amount of work that goes into making lectures and courses go smoothly is insane!
π¨ New paper alert π¨ A Room with an Overview, by @jatinternet and myself.
In it, we uncover what information our participants want to know from smart home systems, and how they can use that information to understand what's going on within them.

We're undertaking some academic research on how professionals keep records about their algorithmic systems. If you're a professional working with algorithmic systems, and happen to have a spare 20 minutes, we would greatly appreciate your input! #AI#ML

Fascinating #FAccT2023 session on bringing people in to high-stakes system design. Seems a huge appetite for people to be involved in the process.
A fair bit of discussion about AI education, but that misses the point that a lot of these systems are inherently non-transparent
Had a great time at #FAccT2023 presenting our work. Reach out to me if youβre interested in the auditability of AR/VR/MR systems or other emerging tech!

Internet of Things - or Internet of Stings? As we use ever more smart devices in our lives & homes, there needs to be much more transparency over how the data they collect & transmit is processed, say @annaidahd@cnorval@jatinternet & colleagues.

@mikarv The way I see it (though I might be alone in this) is that the field is Human Computer Interaction (HCI). For some weird reason, the conference went with CHI, so I use it to refer to the 'CHI community', which is of HCI researchers. CSCW specifically concerns multi-user tech π€·
@laurencediver We recently looked into this, though focusing on general usability as opposed to accessibility. In terms of intelligibility, current practice leaves much to be desired! Happy to chat more if you're interested! https://t.co/0czLIQ0Kp3
