The decision to shut down a restaurant or café - and the loss of jobs and damage to the fabric of local communities that come with it - is always an incredibly difficult one, but is something that hundreds of small food-led hospitality businesses face in the New Year. Increased costs and reduced consumer demand mean margins are currently razor-tight and, as a result, current closures levels are alarmingly high, with over 200 in recent months. The wage inflation that next year’s increase in the minimum wage will create - along with a number of other cost increases - will unfortunately push many more small, local businesses over the edge in 2024.

As Rebecca Feely - owner of the popular Dublin café Kale and Coco that closed last week - told the @TonightVMTV last night, sky-high costs have now reached a point that being busy and having a high turnover is no longer sufficient for restaurants and cafés to survive. This year’s Christmas season will not be enough for many businesses to stay open throughout 2024 and, without a change in Government policy, many other small restaurants and cafés like Rebecca’s around the country will have no choice but to close.

I know it’s really hard but if you’re in a position to do it, please try extra harder to buy your coffee/scone/treat from a small cafe and not one of the chain stores. You might think that your few bob won’t make a difference but believe me, it’s the difference of small family run cafes and coffee/corner shops staying open next year.

It’s soul destroying seeing so many places close their doors already and the worst yet is to come.
