Coalition of Practicing Translators and Interpreters of California America - Nonpartisan advocates for our professions & those we serve, state & nationwide.
Farewell: After nearly 3 years of work & accomplishing our 2 foremost goals, the Coalition says farewell. Our work to win exemption for professional #interpreters and #translators from #AB5 in California succeeded in 2020.
Bad bill promotes “the training program no one asked for”: Thousands of Californians are on strike for decent wages and dignity. #AB432 is a step backward for skilled interpreters who work for the state. Will you urge Senators to say NO? @CASenateDems

California language professionals, the only thing standing in the way of these bad policies getting a green light by lawmakers is YOUR voice as a constituent.

#AB432 & #AB1032 will fail California court interpreters & jeopardize language access. In her op-ed, @co_ptic chair @futbollos sounds a clarion call to do right by the 1000s of independent interpreters who fortify our justice system: https://t.co/tVtlWxP85Z #1nt@AssemblyDems 1/
Protect, don’t pick on, the professionals who bridge language differences. Facts, not falsehoods, should drive state policy. These 2 bills fall short of that basic standard. About the 2 bills:
#AB432 is a misguided effort to create a lower-tier interpreter workforce. 2/
#AB1032 will restrict the ability of freelance interpreters to work for the courts. Over half the interpreters who serve in state courts are non-staff, or ICs. Barriers to hiring them when needed could deny language access for people who speak languages of lesser diffusion. 4/
#AB432 will degrade pay and standards in the profession and could also be costly to the quality of justice in our state. Big thanks to @atanet for leading the way with a call to action around this bill: https://t.co/frCtTxsDmd 3/
She is inspiration, indeed: Lorena Ortiz Schneider, #CoPTIC founder, earns worthy recognition in Women’s History Month edition of #MultiLingual magazine. “I hope to serve as an inspiration for all colleagues to get involved in advocating for their needs.”
Thank you for your generous financial support & faith in that together we would be successful at reaching our objectives. As advocates, we aren’t going away. Please reach us if we can share strategies to help earn respect & victories for our professions and those we serve.

Our efforts in 2021 to build awareness of the dangers of the rigid #ABCtest in the federal #PROAct have worked.
As advocates, we inspired thousands to take action and carry the torch forward. Thank each & every 1 of you, in CA & USA, for your active participation!

writing the law & now its rulemaking excluded Indigenous leaders & experts in providing language access to Indigenous communities. It’s harmful & must get redressed. This misstep in Oregon can have ripple effects far beyond the state. #TitleVI#LanguageRightsAreCivilRights#LEP
Our diligent advocacy helped California get it right to rectify wrongs of #AB5. Senators & the Biden Administration need to heed that example, not harm freelancers & people we serve in every sector of American society. #1nt#xl8#LanguageAccess@USSenators@POTUS@USDOL
Win for language access: Professional linguists can breathe a sigh of relief today. #DavidWeil, the hard-line promoter of misclassifying freelance professionals, including more than 75 percent of T&I who are independent in face & by choice, has withdrawn...https://t.co/7dS7vgMdIi
