Does shoulder tackling work in the NFL? The data says yes.

We broke down NFL tackling with Atavus Tacklytics and compared tackles made with shoulder contact against tackles made with any other part of the body. The shoulder came out ahead in every major category:

Tackles made: 90.1% with the shoulder vs. 80.1% without

Tackle effectiveness: 74.0% with the shoulder vs. 61.6% without

Yards after contact per game: 34.1 with the shoulder vs. 64.6 without

That last number matters most. Tackles that lead with the shoulder give up almost half as many yards after contact. Fewer missed tackles, more effective tackles and fewer hidden yards add up to stopping drives.

This same trend however, holds true across all levels. Your players can learn to do the same.
