Congrats to our @tdsb_LeasideHS JV Basketball award winners: best Teammate Ahmed, MIP Myles, DPOY Tyson & MVP Dom . Great year guys. Congrats to all of the award winners & thanks to the students & staff for organizing the event. Go Lancers.
Spacing interests me because there are some misconceptions about spacing (perhaps standing still while a pick & roll happens). It's harder that it seems. Also want to know how to best teach spacing to young student-athletes.

🔥On Spaces: Simplifying Your Offense
Tired of complicated playbooks that slow your players down?
Less thinking = faster execution.
More spacing, better reads, and players who actually play fast instead of freezing mid-play.

@Coach_DeMarco A5: Helping players understand shot selection. The three may be available (see the game tonight) but the quick three is not as good as paint touches & extra passes.
Pace & Space is not freewheeling basketball. It is a means to a specific goal.
#GBetBBChat
@Coach_DeMarco A4: Players have to trust that although we can't prepare for everything, defense will give something up.
Show reads. Help took first DHO away so we kept it. Drive stopped so fill behind & drive again. Find player guarding 2 (defender stayed w shooter, cutter open).

Week 388 #GBetBBChat: Simplifying Offense
Q4: How do you balance simplicity with the ability to counter specific defensive looks or adjustments mid-game? What’s an example from this past season?
Week 388 #GBetBBChat: Simplifying Offense
Q3: What role does spacing and player movement play in your offense? Any rules, concepts, or adjustments you prioritize over intricate actions?
@Coach_DeMarco A3: Working on more consistent cuts, flare screens & ghost screens this year.
Here is how the JVs respaced & created a second change to score.
Bobby Knight: 2 count. Don't stand in 1 place for more than two moments.
#GBetBBChat
@Coach_DeMarco A2: Pick actions that we need to improve, like Splits action: work on skills/play competitive 3v3 before we go 5v5.
Constrain defense: "ok we are playing FIBA 3x3, defense will blitz any ball screeen" & see what they come up with: https://t.co/sdx7mdLcyk

Week 388 #GBetBBChat: Simplifying Offense
Q2: How do you teach players to read defenses and make quick decisions in a simplified system without over-relying on set plays?
Share a favorite drill or teaching progression.
@Coach_DeMarco A1: Hasn't been perfect but idea of creating space, forcing defense to defend multiple actions & ball finds open man.
From the movie Heat, "that's the discipline." Kids being patient more often than not is the challenge.

Here's a JV ATO: 14 Spain leads to cuts.
Week 388 #GBetBBChat: Simplifying Offense
Q1: What’s one “less is more” principle or core concept you’ve used to simplify your offense that actually increased your team’s efficiency or scoring? How did you implement it?
@Coach__Strick Coaches unsure about how much to include should look at books like Brain Rules by Medina, Teach Like a Champion by Lemov & Kids these Days by Butterwick
Mastering some info>remembering little about a lot
We don’t coach little pros but people who play bball
Choose info carefully
@Coach__Strick@JohnMccarthyyy Aside from 21-24s into shot clock when efficiency is lowest, shooter is saying “I beat my check but the paint got cut off, plus nobody is open,” which I doubt is possible at youth level.
What did Dean Smith say? Make it 7-8/10 in practice every day before you try it in game?
@Coach__Strick In the u18 Americup gold medal game, there was transition, catch & shoot, playing off two… might have been a step-back that went in. Those NCAA players realized that the basic stuff was high % in a physical, well-defended game.
If you are SGA, go for it. If not, keep it simple.
Need an off-season workout for your team? Try these suggestions from the 1962-63 Stanley Cup Champions Toronto Maple Leads. Get ready for some golf & knee bends.

@Coach_DeMarco A5: You get what you prepare for. Here’s a video from LeBron/Nash’s mind the Game podcast about self-doubt.
If my game card sucks, the scout was weak or we never practiced it, our end of game situations will not prove fruitful. But if we prepare, we’ll be ready.
#GBetBBChat
@Coach_DeMarco A4: I won’t post the playing cards everyone asks about.
Games to 7 (2s & 3s - charges win), must consolidate win with FT, losers run. As many games as you can fit into 10 (or 15 min).
and FIBA 3x3 - lots of reps, nobody can hide.
