Delivers in the Clutch …. Again, and Again
MONTGOMERY – Clay-Chalkville High School senior wide receiver Corey Barber has a knack for making the dramatic play when his team needs it.
In last week’s come-from-behind 28-25 victory over defending Class 7A Thompson in the AHSAA Network/Alabama Public TV Game of the Week televise live across the nation by WOTM TV, Barber had not one but two clutch plays when his team needed it most.
Trailing 25-21 late in the fourth quarter, Barber caught a pass Aaron Frye and raced 86 yards to the 3-yard line to set the game-winning touchdown three plays later with 3:44 left in the game. His game-winning catch, which came after two plays lost seven yards back to the 10-yard line, was a one-handed grab he made in the back of the end one to put the Cougars (6-0) of Coach Stuart Floyd ahead for good. The catch also landed Barber in this week’s AHSAA Football Spotlight for Week 5.
His 86-yard pass reception he carried to the 3-yard line earlier in the fourth quarter from quarterback Aaron Frye set up his game-winning catch a minute later. Two running plays lost seven yards to set up the third-and-goal pass play from the 10-yard line.
He finished the night with eight catches for 149 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 72 yards on eight carries and one score.
“You get in those situations, you’re going to call your best player,” Clay-Chalkville coach Stuart Floyd said. “He is going to deliver. “
Thompson (4-2) took a 24-21 lead on a 20-yard field goal by Ethan Black with just over seven minutes remaining. Three plays later, the Cougars faced third-and-12 from their 11-yard line and called timeout with 5:23 remaining.
Frye connected with Barber, who turned the short route into an 86-yard reception before he was tackled at the 3 to set up his final play.
Barber now has 32 catches this season for 657 yards and nine touchdowns. Clay-Chalkville High School
