Press Virginia didn't really care if the 5-man caught the ball in the back court

They would just deny everyone else the ball and watch the 5-man try to initiate offense for probably the first time in their life

It often didn't go well for the 5-man

Good luck to the teams that try to rush through the 2-1-1-1 Press Defense

Inviting the controlled chaos

Spain action out of the baseline inbound

Keeping the ball in the middle third with respectable shooters flanking the action effectively turns it into 3v3

On the middle catch in Zone Motion, it’s an easy passing read:

1️⃣ If the forward drops, fan to the wing
2️⃣ If the forward stays spread, dump down to the baseline 🎥

Book is Live!

Over the last several months, I’ve had the chance to go back through ten seasons as the head coach at Merrimack and put into words so much of what has shaped our program.

More Than the Zone is not a book just about our zone defense. It’s about everything underneath it as well - the recruiting, development, standards, practice design, staff structure, offense, defense, analytics, preparation, and daily habits that have become the Merrimack Basketball Operating System.

I loved reliving it. I hope coaches, leaders, and anyone interested in building a team or organization can take something from it and make it their own.

More Than the Zone is available now on Amazon.
