"The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the club won't be worth a dime."
- Babe Ruth
We keep blaming teachers for declining literacy.
But we're raising a generation that consumes information through 15-second videos, endless scrolling, and constant notifications. Then we assess them as though they've spent years building the reading stamina to sit with a complex text for 30 or 60 minutes.
Scrolling is a sprint.
Reading is a marathon.
Today's students interact with language differently than any generation before them. They skim. They swipe. They jump from one idea to the next. Yet our literacy assessments still require sustained attention, deep comprehension, inference, vocabulary, and the ability to remain engaged with complex texts.
Those are essential skills. They always will be.
But if children spend far less time reading books outside of school than previous generations, why are we surprised when reading stamina declines?
This isn't about blaming parents or lowering expectations. It's about recognizing a profound cultural shift. Schools are increasingly being asked to develop skills that many children have fewer opportunities to practice beyond the classroom.
Teachers matter.
Instruction matters.
But literacy has never begun with a standardized test.
It begins with hearing stories, seeing adults read, turning pages, asking questions, imagining new worlds, and discovering that some things are worth staying with long after the first page.
If we want stronger readers, we can't place the entire burden on teachers. Building literacy has always been, and will always be, a shared responsibility between schools, families, and the culture our children grow up in.
Florida has become a leader in protecting animals and holding accountable those who harm them. Today, we built on that record with new legislation to strengthen penalties for animal abuse and improve consumer protections for pet owners.
HB 559 gives law enforcement and local communities additional tools to crack down on animal abuse, including new felony penalties for horrific acts of animal cruelty. SB 1004 enhances legal protections for Floridians who buy and own pets and provides real accountability for businesses that violate the law.
Florida is a law-and-order state. We will not tolerate those who abuse and exploit innocent animals, and we will defend the rights of responsible pet owners.
In July 2025, the State of Florida and the federal government entered an agreement to expedite Everglades restoration and complete the EAA Reservoir by 2029. As of today, all federally managed contracts have been executed, ensuring that the funding and resources for this project will be there through completion.
We are now on track to finish this transformative project five years ahead of the original schedule. This is a major victory for America’s Everglades and a testament to the progress our joint federal and state teams have made in just nine months.
Having a fully functioning body is such an underrated privilege. Legs that work, eyes that can see, hands that can move… it’s all a blessing. Take care of it.
Should not even be a debate about 29-0 @MiamiOH_BBall as to whether they should be part of @MarchMadnessMBB if they do not win the MAC tourney -metrics used to define who should qualify as at large teams is one sided & favors MEDIOCRITY from power conferences over EXCELLENCE by mid majors .
We’re all just one diagnosis, one accident, one unexpected phone call away from a completely different life. So stay humble and never take anything for granted.
