Yesterday, was an incredible win for UVA football. 11/9/24 was also the one-year anniversary of a life-changing moment for an amazing young man, Perris Jones. I have had the privilege of getting to know Perris over the last year and his story is worthy of a full-length documentary. Consider these highlights:
* Perris was born in an urban area of Florida where in his words, the career aspirations of young boys was “play in the NFL, play in the NBA or cook fries at McDonald’s.”
* At 8 years old, he burned his family’s apartment down when he set a stuffed animal on fire.
* After that incident, some in his family began to invest more in him. He began to do football drills in the backyard with his grandad.
* In spite of his surroundings, he excelled in school and had the option to play football at Yale or UVA. Obviously, he chose UVA.
* He came to UVA as a walk-on, but never got much of an exposure to the playbook. He had to dig plays out of the trash can and ended up “stealing” the login to the computer system from another player so he could understand the offense.
* When Coach Elliott came on, he got his chance. Then the the tragedy hit in 2022, with 3 teammates being killed and his roommate at the time, Mike Hollins being shot.
* 2023 was his breakout year and things were going great until November 9, 2023. A tackle left him with a spinal cord injury and his dreams of ever playing football again were gone forever.

To fans, we watch a game and get impatient when the wins don’t cascade immediately. For people like Perris, it is more than a game and often a chance to change the trajectory of their life and that of their families. We have not forgotten you Perris. Your story will be told because it is full of inspiration and you are a master communicator.
