Athlete of the Week: Fiona Erb
Fiona led the varsity girls squad at the Round-Up with toughness and a statement performance. She set the tone all day and anchored the team with poise and big-time wins.
Proud of you, Fiona!
When my 14 year old daughter wanted to get stronger for volleyball, I told her I would train her.
Being a 14 year old who didn't want to listen to Dad, she said she wanted to go to "Pryde Athletics", a training place down the street.
We said fine. We got her 8 sessions. I told them she needed to build strength and explosiveness.
The first day they put her on a circuit of trap bar deadlifts, one arm dumbbell rows, and box jumps.
No rest periods.
One after another.
Light weights.
After the workout, I said "That workout was shit. Fuck this, I'm training you, the end."
By the end of 6 months, she was deadlifting 200 pounds, squatting 135, and shoulder pressing 65 for reps (at 120 pound bodyweight).
Guess what? She is way more explosive, has gained muscle, and is a much better volleyball player.
I often get asked "hey, I know you train your daughter, what should my kid do?"
SIMPLE SHIT. GET STRONG AT THE BASICS.
The issue is simple. Kids are weak. Get them stronger.
The end.
