A peer-reviewed study by Yale professor Edieal Pinker analyzing 1,559 New York Times articles on the Israel-Hamas war found consistent imbalances that portrayed Israel as bearing near-exclusive responsibility for the continuing conflict while diminishing Hamas’s role.

The study found that Palestinian personal accounts of suffering appeared on average two out of every three days, while comparable accounts of Israeli suffering appeared in fewer than 4% of articles focused on events on the ground.

Pinker found that coverage frequently omitted Israeli casualties after October 7, deaths of Hamas fighters and subsequent Palestinian violence. In the earlier dataset, 1,423 articles did not mention either Israeli post-Oct. 7 casualties or Hamas combatant deaths, while 234 articles discussed the conflict without mentioning the October 7 Hamas attack, compared with just 28 that omitted Israeli violence.

The study argues that the resulting narrative presented Israel as the “sole aggressor” after October 7 and Palestinians predominantly as passive victims, potentially leaving readers without a clear picture of Israeli losses or Hamas’s continuing role in the war.
