“His lips brush my ear as he whispers, “What did my arms do before they held you?” I feel his smile on his lips.
“Sylvia Plath,” I whisper, knowing the quote.”
“This is the place where we’ve both gone mad.” She turns her head just a fraction, to the lily pads idle in the water.
“Who on Earth would want to procreate with you? Eight times?” She meets my burgeoning, conceited grin.
“I must be insane.”
“I wanted to talk. I wanted to explore her. I wanted so many things in that moment that my brain went five directions at once. I was overwhelmed.
More overwhelmed than I’d ever been.”
“Our rigid bodies weld together, and he clutches me in a firm, comforting embrace, but I catch sight of his jaw muscles, constricting. He submerges as many pained sentiments as me.
Very softly, he whispers, “I’m so sorry, Rose.”
“I’m attracted to people.
To the words they speak, to the actions they take, to their full-bodied mannerisms and soulful gaits. I am attracted to people. To impassioned hearts that beat out of sync, the ones that skip a measure, heard in hushed places and violent spaces.”
“I thought about how my mind blistered. I thought about how his hands commanded the moment as much as his lips. I thought about how he held me like I’d always been in his possession, as he’d always been in mine.
What’s inside this feeling that screams at me?
Devotion.
Fealty.”
“Those of us with IQs in the .01 percentile have an invitation to all conversations,” I tell him. “I know you’re not privy to this, so don’t be upset. There are geniuses. There are rational people. There are idiots. And then there’s you.”
“I don’t need Connor Cobalt the Tutor. I’m perfectly capable of studying on my own.”
“I’m not Connor Cobalt the Tutor right now.”
“Then who are you giving me?”
“Connor Cobalt the Boyfriend.”
“How much of him is real?”
Connor began to smile. “Terribly real, darling.”
“You hated Faust boys, and I wanted to be the one you hated most.”
Translation: I wanted to be the one always on your mind.
I fight a mounting smile. “You succeeded.”
Connor grins. “I know.”
“I created this beautiful person with a brilliant, one-of-kind man. There was no conceivable way I could fear holding her or loving her or giving her everything in my absolute power.”
“Connor rubs his lips as though to hide a grin, but it’s overtaking his face, consuming his features and escalating with each second. I wear simple boy-short black panties but the ass says: I LOVE CONNOR COBALT!”
“I whisper, “I can hear our hearts breaking.”
A tear wets my fingertips, his tears, and his other hand encases my face, the way mine does him. His lips nearly skim mine.
“I’ll shield your ears from the sound of heartbreak.”
“Your fate is my fate.” I believe it. “And they don’t love you, Connor. They love the person you give them.” She pauses and says, “I love you. I’m proud of you. And I can’t imagine being anywhere but by your side.”
