Fmr. Director of Policy @teenstakecharge & @integratenyc & SDAG mbr. ✯ Public school alum fighting for integration & equity in schools ✯ Williams '23 (she/her)
With this system, a small privileged few are rich beyond conscience, and almost all others are doomed to be poor at some level. That's the way the system works. And since we know that the system will not change the rules, we are going to have to change the system. -MLK Jr.
It's time to get rid of all the adjectives in front of the word "school."
"Screened," "gifted," "specialized," y'all can go.
We only need one adjective and that is "public."
The postal service is a public good, any attempt to privatize it is an attack on the working class. Our public goods must remain public. #SaveUSPS#DSAforUSPS
Hey Twitter! We are a coalition of students from New York City’s screened public schools working to dismantle the racist and classist public school admission “screens” with the aim of integrating NYC’s schools!
For scale— since working on &presenting these recs, I have literally grown up and gone to college and have watched hundreds of young people unsuccessfully try to get thru to the DOE bc these have yet to be implemented. Our voices matter and urgently. The DOE is losing leaders
The recommendations were developed by TTC with other youth leaders as well as DOE staff. We first presented them in June 2018 to @DOEChancellor and his leadership team.
A full year passed between this presentation and adoption. Noticing a trend?? (2/6)
Today an upstate Republican legislator told us that they opposed #RepealHechtCalandra because "if different criteria is needed, this should be done administratively not legislatively." 🤦♀️ 🤦♂️
That's literally our exact argument.

if you oppose integration bc you’re scared it will “lower the quality” of your child’s school, you’re just as racist as the D2 CEC members harassing high school students on a daily basis for fighting for our right to an equitable education 🙂 also unfollow me pls thx
As a Tech grad, discovery alum & Black girl who was heavily involved in her SHS community I can tell you that the cultural paradigm shift needed wont be fixed by putting more Black faces in a toxic place. All 30,000 kids who take this test deserve quality ed. #RepealHechtCalandra
Thanks to @JuliaCarmel__ and @SenatorRJackson we now have a bill in the State Senate to #RepealHechtCalandra, the racist law that keeps specialized HSs segregated. Soon, we will publish every Senator's position on the bill. https://t.co/6fI578OxDr
There is now a companion bill in the Senate to repeal the law governing admissions to NYC's coveted but segregated specialized high schools: https://t.co/2gV4itEIeu

Stop saying “we can’t afford” Homes for All, Green New Deal or Medicare for All.
If we didn't spend trillions on endless wars and tax breaks for millionaires, we could afford to house our homeless, care for our seniors, and save our planet.
We suffer from greed, not scarcity.
Hi, @mikebenedetto82 as chair of the education committee in the state assembly, what is your position on A10731, the bill to #RepealHechtCalandra and return control of specialized high school admissions to NYC? Stand for racial justice by voting yes https://t.co/VJJDr5c1p7
**LAS Statement on the Critical Need to Acknowledge White Fragility and Organizations to Become Anti-Racist**
"To be anti-racist, to dismantle racism here at LAS... we must all recognize that white supremacy drives every policy and law, every opportunity and every advantage."
“You cannot oppose anti-racism and effectively represent Black and Brown people. It’s impossible.” @MaudMaron has no business having a career in public defense, and we’re ashamed that she works for the Legal Aid Society.
What we were demanding was a $1bil disinvestment from NYPD. What we got was a $1bil cut to education. Budgets are moral documents. NYC students need more support now than ever. A safe reopening cannot happen without the proper resources @NYCMayor@DOEChancellor
Toby Paperno of @TeensTakeCharge: We will make sure every candidate has student voice high on their agenda. Issues like equity, access and education on their agendas. They're thinking about having a forum to get them to make commitments. #EWA20
