Democracy does not defend itself. People do.

They do it in courtrooms and classrooms, in parliaments and polling stations, in newsrooms, communities, and civic movements around the world. They do it despite rising authoritarianism, shrinking civic space, disinformation, political violence, and declining trust in institutions.

This #InternationalDayofDemocracy, we celebrate the people and organizations who refuse to give up on the democratic promise.

Over the past year, the Global Democracy Coalition has worked to connect that commitment across borders. Through regional forums, webinars, podcasts, advocacy, and cross-regional exchanges, partners confronted democratic challenges, shared innovations, and worked to turn fragmented efforts into collective action.

We also stood alongside a democracy community facing unprecedented challenges. As funding cuts affected organizations, the Coalition helped document impacts, elevate concerns, share resources, and create space to rethink how the democracy ecosystem can adapt and endure.

But this story is not about one coalition.

It is about 193 partner organizations working across every region to protect civic space, strengthen elections, advance human rights, support youth leadership, fight corruption, counter disinformation, and ensure people have a voice. The power of this Coalition is not its size. It is what becomes possible when 193 organizations choose solidarity over isolation, cooperation over fragmentation, and collective action over despair.

In a few weeks, that same community will gather for the #GDCGlobalForum to answer a defining question: Why does democratic participation keep growing while democratic trust keeps declining, and what would it take for one to genuinely reinforce the other?

Because democracy is never finished.

It must be renewed by every generation, protected in every region, and made real in every community.

To every partner, activist, reformer, researcher, journalist, public servant, youth leader, and citizen working to keep democracy alive: today, we celebrate you.

Tomorrow, we continue the work.

Together.
