The debate around this tweet is fascinating because at Hallam and HBS, all I did was point out to my professors why frameworks they theorized wouldn’t work in Nigeria.

They all wanted to study Nigeria more to understand why? I was offered research opportunities to help do this. I started to look closely and test my assumptions on why things don’t work as planned and realized as I was doing so that they worked as Nigerians ACTUALLY planned and NOT as Nigerians say they planned. There is a difference.

There is cause and there is effect. Nigeria suffers from the effect of corruption and lack of any will to tame it. If you look closely to see why the corruption exists, it is closely tied to lack of safety nets. Why don’t safety nets exist? Because we don’t have the basis for public goods which is proper nationhood.

Nigeria works as planned because Nigeria was never planned. Frederick Forsyth calls it an aberration and convenient amalgamation of British colonial gains in West Africa. Ghana is similar but why does it work better than Nigeria? It is because there is less delusion about the truth there.

Nigeria has only largely had pretend governance. The only time we had true governance (during OBJ’s regime) was when we had some semblance of growth. OBJ’s regime is proof that economic frameworks and policies work in Nigeria. Telco is one great example.
