Rebecca the 'White House Raccoon'

In 1926, supporters of President Coolidge from Mississippi sent a live raccoon to the White House as part of the traditional Thanksgiving dinner. However, instead of serving her as a meal, First Lady Grace Coolidge decided to name her Rebecca and make her a family pet.

Rebecca was quite a character. She was known for her mischievous behavior, which included unscrewing light bulbs, opening cabinets, and unpotting houseplants. The Coolidges were quite fond of her, and she was even given an embroidered collar inscribed with “White House Raccoon” for Christmas. Rebecca enjoyed participating in the annual White House Easter egg roll and had a diet that included shrimp, persimmons, and eggs.

The Coolidges had a special house made for her in a large tree, with a wire fence built around it for protection. When outdoors, she was kept chained, but inside the White House, she had her liberty. One of her favorite pastimes was playing in a bathtub with a little water and a cake of soap.

When the Coolidges left the White House at the end of the president’s term in 1929, they donated Rebecca to the zoological quarters in Rock Creek Park, now known as the National Zoo.
