2/ Order of operations : my "close all open items" function was running BEFORE my conditional check. So clicking an open item would close it, then immediately reopen it. so by moving the function call inside the if statement fixed everything.

Two bugs that taught me a lot:
1/ Grabbing the wrong DOM element : I was targeting the parent of the clicked icon, but the <p> tag I needed was a sibling, not a child. Fixed it with nextElementSibling.
