@CoozeLauren I don't think that Americans dominate the music industry, Canada has some of the most dominant with the likes of Drake, and Justin Beiber.
@JamesWi62990602 I agree with your statement, I think we should get more exposure for people making music in the country along as more uncommonly known artists.
#MUNMUS2011 I do think it is necessary to have a quota for Canadian artists but I think it should be artists making music out of Canada or just more uncommon names because Canada does have big stars in the pop work today, Justin Beiber is a great example of this
@cearakeough The schlock artists and record labels took advantage of racism in America going on at the time and used it to profit off only white radio stations. An example of this is Pat Boone's "Tutti Frutti" which he stole from Little Richard.
@beck_gould I agree 100% with your statement, they weren't as good of songs when covered and really only used young attractive men/women to cover those songs to gain popularity, when they lacked raw ability to sing.
#MUNMUS2011 I think the "schlock" music artists and producers took advantage of racism ongoing at the time. They used African American songs, covered them and those covers aired on strictly white radio stations. Plus, the cover artists lacked singing skills.
@kboliver12 I also feel that the voice break technique shows his emotion in "I Got a Woman" he uses it to show his passion and love for this woman. He does it in his own unique way
@DkoreillyMusic I agree with your statement 100%, I think he may have paved the way for other people, for example, Michael Jackson he used a very unique break voice technique along with his raw talent and crazy dances moves made him the King of Pop
#MUNMUS2011 I think the breaking of the voice Ray Charles uses shows his own unique sound and creates a strong sense of emotion when he does use it. I think Kanye sampling and mixing "I Got A Woman" made his voice more recognizable in this generation.
@klwellwood I somewhat agree with your statement but I also believe that apps like Youtube and Soundcloud allow you to dive deeper and find different sounds and artists. But many mainstream listeners still listen to the radio or whatever is on the Apple or Spotify charts
@JamesWi62990602#MUNMUS2011 I agree with this statement, the stereotype of if you don't have Apple Brands or Beats your not considered wealthy. Also, preference comes into play I personally use Apple because I think it the easiest to use but i never have the newest models they are costly.
#MUNMUS2011 This allows me to hear different types of rappers compared to the mainstream pop/hip-hop that's on the charts today. Others may dive deeper into other genres & find artists or songs they have never heard before. These platforms expand peoples music tastes.
#MUNMUS2011 Recent technology such as music apps & cell phones allows people to post and search for different genres of music to find they're identity when it comes to music. I found myself searching on these apps for different "underground" rappers to find different sounds.
@JamesWi62990602 I agree with this tweet a lot of artists videos and lyrics have something to do with "sex, money and drugs". A lot of popular music talks about sex like Harry Styles new song "Watermelon Sugar".
@EmileeFarrell16 This is very true, artists use things like cash, high-end cars and designer clothing in their music videos. This causes the working class to try and get designer clothes etc. You see a lot of teens with designer belts because artists portray this sense of false need #MUNMUS2011
@JvandenScott One specific example that comes to mind when I think of advertisements producing false need is Dr. Dre's Beats. They are popular because of Dre's name and his popularity in the hip-hip industry but are very pricey compared to other headphones. #MUNMUS2011
I think popular music does somewhat keep listeners passive but not all. For example, the radio doesn't play half the stuff that people actually listen to on phones so people buy music apps to explore their desired genres. #MUNMUS2011
