Individuals can save their spent coffee and use it to benefit themselves with just a few ideas from the Circular Community. As for these larger companies, they can process spent coffee and upcycle it into products that have commercial value.
C O M M U N I T Y :
There’s no ONE solution to deal with such a huge amount of spent coffee waste, but through the Circular Coffee Community we can find different initiatives to reduce it. This needs to take place starting with individual households all the way up to companies.
In other words: No waste just sustainability.
So a “Circular Economy” in the coffee world becomes CIRCULAR COFFEE. Together in the coffee drinking community we can create innovative solutions, and it starts with YOU!
S O L U T I O N :
We think the solution is to apply the principles of a “Circular Economy”. Our current consumption model produces waste everywhere, and when we say everywhere, we mean EVERYWHERE. In nature nothing is wasted!
To get an idea of this amount, in the UK, 95 million cups of coffee are consumed every day creating around 500,000 tons of coffee ground waste every year. Over 90% of this coffee ground waste is not being recycled. The amount produced in Scotland is around 40,000 tons.
These spent coffee grounds, when not processed properly end up in the bin and later in a landfill where they emit harmful greenhouse gases including methane. Over a 100 year period methane is 34 times more potent than carbon dioxide and one of the leading causes of climate change
