Her Private Hell: A vibey fairytale giallo in a cyberpunk sci-fi world. Felt like I was dreaming. So glad Refn is back because no one else is making movies like this.

loved the odyssey. loved it! but there was a cold rush of horror that came over me when the expository style of dialogue kept going after the first ten minutes and in fact didn’t stop until the very second the credits rolled
I don’t really think anyone is saying that good literature doesn’t exist anymore, but I think there is still a valid complaint to be had when it comes to the language and reading level of what is being pushed to the masses across the different genres.
I do think a lot of the people who say all books these days are garbage don’t know their own taste or how to find books that match it. There are so many amazing books out there in all genres, but there is a certain skill and level of trial and error in finding ones you like

What's missing in this new mini-debate on Nolan's Odyssey is the question of form. Of course the Ancient Greeks knew about guilt but they did not express it through psychologized/ theologized confessions (the film's climactic one is through a lattice screen! So Catholic!). /1
part of the literacy crisis is the inability to pick up on context clues and having to be spoon fed everything. the death of an analytical audience is why so much content is slop. ALSO it was said explicitly but ok
I can’t stress this enough: Olivia Wilde’s THE INVITE is the best example in recent years of old-school filmmaking. Classic directing, blocking, (lack of) camera movements, and she got the best performance out of Rogen/Cruz/Norton in recent years!!
