8/8: Many thanks to participants of Cyprus Women’s Health Research Initiative Study @cohere_kisaa and all contributing researchers from University of Oxford @Ox_wrh, @NPEU_Oxford, Eastern Mediterranean University @EMUOFFICIAL and Cyprus Women’s Health Research Society @KISADernek
1/8: Caesarean-sections are lifesaving. However, unmet need and overuse can bring complications. Our paper on prevalence, trends and associations of #csectionand#breastfeedingfor the 1st time from Northern Cyprus is out @PLOSONE: https://t.co/v7ajNWKf8n @Ox_wrh@EMUOFFICIAL
7/8: Awareness campaigns and change in legal framework to allow for midwife-led continuity models of birthing care are needed to decrease #csection rates and improve care.
6/8: Due to fragmented healthcare services, and lack for unified health recording keeping, these statistics didn’t exist before for this population. In light of these figures the extremely high #csection rates is an island-wide issue. @BirthForward
5/8: Women who gave birth after 2005 were 1.24 (95%CI: 1.06–1.45) times more likely to breastfeed for >12 weeks compared to women who gave birth before 1995. There was no association between #csection and #breastfeeding prevalence or length.
4/8: Prevalence of ever #breastfeeding remained steady throughout the years at 88.7% and there was no significant association between breastfeeding initiation and the year of pregnancy, or demographic and maternal medical and pregnancy related variables.
3/8: #csection births overtook vaginal births in 1999. Relative risk is estimated at 2.60 (95%CI: 2.14–2.15) for babies being delivered by #csection after 2005 compared to before 1995.
2/8: #csection rate in 2017 was found to be 72.5% among 2,836 first pregnancies which was 11.1% in 1981. Closest neighbour, Republic of Cyprus estimate in 2017 among all livebirths was 55.3% (highest in EU) #WHO recommended rate is 10-15%.
