We honor the extraordinary service and sacrifice of Herschel "Woody" Williams, the last living Medal of Honor recipient from the Battle of Iwo Jima. On February 23, 1945, amid the brutal fighting on Iwo Jima, Corporal Williams displayed extraordinary heroism as a Marine flamethrower operator. Under intense enemy fire, he courageously cleared fortified Japanese positions, paving the way for American forces and ensuring mission success. For his valor above and beyond the call of duty, he was awarded the Medal of Honor by President Truman. Even after his military service, Woody remained committed to honoring Gold Star Families, ensuring that the sacrifices of those who gave their lives for our freedom would never be forgotten. Woody passed away in 2022.
