#ETFO is condemning the provincial government’s growing number of school board takeovers, calling the moves an unjustified overreach and a threat to local democracy in public education.
In a statement released Friday, @etfopresident David Mastin said the Ford government is increasingly replacing democratically elected trustees with provincially appointed supervisors – a shift the union says removes community accountability and centralizes decision-making power at Queen’s Park. #onted #onpoli

It’s report card time, and one student has fallen behind.
Minister of Education, Paul Calandra, has fallen so far back he’s earned a Code R — Not Meeting Expectations.
When it comes to Staffing Levels & Student Supports, we’re seeing:
❌ Chronic staff shortages
❌ Burnout & unmet student needs
❌ Short-term fixes instead of real planning
Students and education workers deserve FAR better.

The Globe and Mail is reporting on the Ford government’s unprecedented move to place a seventh Ontario school board under provincial supervision and put another on notice.
As #OSSTF President @marthahradowy told the Globe: “For years, education unions and school boards have been sounding the alarm about provincewide underfunding and staffing shortages.”
“It is not clear how supervision addresses any of those pressing issues. In fact, it risks distracting from them.”

MEDIA RELEASE: Seven Ontario school boards are now under provincial supervision.
As OSSTF/FEESO President @marthahradowy said: “This level of government interference is unprecedented in Ontario’s education system, and it leads us to question the government’s real motives.”
For years, #OSSTF has warned about underfunding and staffing shortages. Supervision does not address those long-standing issues, in fact, it distracts from the challenges in Ontario schools.
“What is needed now is concrete action. Students and education workers are paying the price for years of underfunding and policy decisions that have ignored conditions in schools. The government must act to ensure safe learning and working environments for everyone.”

Despite sidelining trustees to rein in spending, we’ve learned in the almost 7 months since being appointed, the TDSB’s government supervisor hasn’t made any changes to the spending plan, with the board operating under the same budget approved by trustees last spring.
School trustees "are locally elected to be the link between the community and the school board. They
represent the interests of parents, students and taxpayers. This governance model is
fundamental to local democracy and public accountability, principles that must be preserved."
Pro-public education MPPs speak out against the decision by the new TDSB supervisor to raise the cap on special education class sizes.
“This decision will increase pressure on teachers and staff and reduce the individualized support that high-needs students depend on to learn and thrive,” said Gilmour. “Parents of special needs kids are telling us that they’re scared to drop their kids off at school in the morning. That’s not okay.
“Our kids deserve safety, dignity, and a chance to thrive. The Minister must reverse these dangerous cuts, invest in special education, and ensure classrooms have the staff and resources necessary to keep our kids safe.”

No one buys a jersey with 'bullpen day' on the back, and it's not exactly anyone's first choice, but this group stepped up vs. the highest scoring lineup in MLB when it counted most. Tactically, it's better than letting a team like NYY get comfortable.
Shocking rise in the use of non-qualified teachers!
Did you know that since 2017, there's been an 1100% spike📈 in the use of non-qualified teachers in the TDSB😲
#OSSTF President @marthahradowy expressed her frustration to @CityNewsTO, saying "We have to make sure that our students are having access to qualified, educated professionals each and every day to ensure that there are no learning gaps."
This is a serious issue across Toronto & all of Ontario as teachers are being driven out of the profession due the province's deliberate underfunding of public education.
A local parent also shared her frustrations with the province, and how they're wasting money on things like private mega spas and tunelling under the 401, but the government won't invest in public education.
"It can be very destabilizing, right? You come home and your teacher hasn't been there and you're not sure when they're coming back." — Kate Dupuis, TDSB parent.

Niagara Falls General Hospital was flooded due to a water main break and EMS had to start redirecting patients to St. Catharines. Urgent care in the region is already under serious strain, and this weekend, only one hospital is operating at full capacity in the whole region.
Decades of underfunding and neglect are pushing the region’s health care system to the brink and making them more vulnerable in a crisis like this. Thank you to all the health care workers who are holding down the fort and continuing to provide care amidst this crisis.
🚨 A manufactured crisis. A dangerous distraction.
As the Ford Conservatives move to take over local school boards, they continue their erosion of democracy in public education.
Unions and opposition parties are speaking out against this attack on community voice and local governance.
📣 @OSSTFtoronto President Michelle Teixeira joined @OntarioNDP and Toronto District School Board Trustees, saying:
“Despite the TDSB balancing its budget—and no evidence of financial mismanagement—the Ford government is blaming trustees instead of taking responsibility themselves.”

By taking over school boards, the Ford government is shutting parents and communities out of decisions that impact their kids’ futures.
Today I stood with @osstf, @OECTAProv, @osbcucscso, @otffeo, local trustees, and parents from across Ontario — united in one clear message: our schools need real investment, not more power grabs and political games.
There’s strength in this movement—and we’re all in to support our kids.
