"When well constructed, grading scales with fewer categories that describe clearly distinct levels of student mastery or proficiency are not only more reliable, but also offer students better information to guide improvements" -@tguskey & @SusanBrookhart#sblchat#AtAssessment
The statements “Your grade reflects your learning in this class” and “earn extra credit points for showing school spirit on Fridays” can’t peacefully coexist in a classroom.
It’s one or the other.
Pick a side.
Assessing and communicating student learning is a 👊qualitative👊 endeavor (not a quantitative calculation).
As a former math teacher and 'numbers' person, this is a hard one to swallow. But, it's the truth.

If essential standards are just that, then reteaching and reassessment when students are not yet proficient are essential as well. No class designation (regular, honors, etc) precludes this. #sblchat
Our staff wrote words of welcome for our high school students on Wednesday. There still here & greet kids coming in door 1. Thank you KHS staff. You’re the best. #kanelandpride
This is great! We wrote Making Grades Matter with a book study format in mind. Each chapter ends with individual and team self-assessment continuums and templates for action planning. #AtAssessment#sblchat#atplc

In what may be a silver lining for schools previously considering a transition to standards-based grading, the pandemic may help stakeholders better understand “why” SBG will better communicate student learning separate from non-cognitive behaviors. 👇
