“Five Years” is the opening track from David Bowie’s 1972 masterpiece The Rise and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. Written by Bowie, the song introduces the album's apocalyptic premise: Earth has only five years left before its destruction. Though not released as a single, it helped propel the album to #5 on the UK Albums Chart, and the song itself entered the UK Singles Chart for the first time in 2016 following Bowie's passing.

Bowie built the song around ordinary people's reactions to impending catastrophe, gradually increasing the emotional intensity until its desperate finale. Its raw power was captured perfectly during a legendary 1972 performance on The Old Grey Whistle Test, where he sang directly to the camera, transitioning from quiet reflection to pure apocalyptic panic and cementing his reputation as one of rock's greatest theatrical performers.
