#illini Nine years. That’s all it took for Brad Underwood to take Illinois from rock bottom to the Final Four.
Let’s not forget where this program was in 2017. From missing tournaments, no identity, no national relevance. Fast forward to now: multiple Big Ten titles, consistent March runs, and a Final Four for the first time since 2005
Yeah, I’ve had my doubts at times. The X’s & O’s, in-game adjustments, defensive lapses, we’ve all questioned it. But that’s part of building something real.
Because what matters most? He BUILT this.
• Turned Illinois into a consistent tournament team (6 straight appearances)
• Developed one of the most elite offenses in the country
• Made Illinois a destination again for top talent
• Restored belief in this program
And most importantly, he changed the standard.
This isn’t a “hope to compete” program anymore. This is a program that EXPECTS to win, EXPECTS to go deep, and now EXPECTS Final Fours.
Getting there is hard. Winning at that level is even harder, margins are razor thin
But Brad proved something this year:
Illinois basketball is BACK.
Not just relevant… but nationally respected.
And if it only took 9 years to get here?
Imagine what the next 5 look like🔶🔷
#Illini #MarchMadness
“We’ve got Illinois back to a level where they’re in Final Fours again, and by God, as long as I’m the ball coach, I better not take 21 damn years to get back there.”
Brad Underwood after their loss to UConn.
This I’m confident about: We aren’t going to have to wait 21 years to see Illinois in the Final Four again.
In fact, how’s next April in Detroit sound?
I’m so happy for all the young Illini fans getting to experience a Final Four for the first time.
And I’m so happy for all the older Illini fans getting to experience a Final Four again after such a long wait.
Sports weeks don’t get much better than this coming one. Enjoy it!
In 1999 when I was coaching at WIU we played at Illinois. We sat on the bench during shoot around and Brad told me that Illinois was his dream job. So happy for him.
Getting the monkey off their back & making this Final Four could set off a huge run of March success in the years to come…
- Pressure’s off Brad (who isn’t going anywhere)
- Retainable roster
- Investment from donors probably increases
- European pipeline strengthens & will continue
- Consistently fun, explosive offense that is putting guys in the NBA
Wouldn’t surprise me at all if Illinois is back in the F4 MULTIPLE times before Brad hangs em’ up
Illinois lost the most games in a two-year span in program history during Brad Underwood’s first two seasons at Illinois.
Now, in his ninth year, he has it back in the Final Four and has officially elevated it into one of the top programs in college basketball.
A huge congrats to my buddy, @CoachUnderwood and his entire staff and team on making the @FinalFourNCAA! We had dinner the first night Brad arrived in Champaign after accepting the job, and we talked about this happening. Love it when a plan comes together!
I-L-L!! @IlliniMBB
Congrats to Illinois and it's fans.
Most underrated college basketball fan-base in America, full of passionate folks who love college hoops and their team.
Oh, and they got a hell of a basketball team too.
Enjoy Indianapolis, Illini fans.
You've got a HELL of a squad 😤😤
Brad Underwood on making his first Final Four:
"I'm gonna get emotional, but I've been doing this 39 years. You dream about this as a kid. I dreamt about doing it at Illinois, when my wife bought Tyler, who was maybe 2, a Brian Cook jersey. It's always been a special place. There's been no other thing for me. This is my dream job."
Thank you Ayo
Thank you Trent
Thank you Kofi
Thank you Terrence
Thank you Marcus
Thank you Coleman
Thank you to all the Illini who helped turn this program around
We’re going to the Final Four
