Why do our people risk going to South Africa to live there without residency permits?
Because we have failed them.
Those we entrust with power have become grossly irresponsible and greedy specimens of humanity. They understand public office not as service, but as an opportunity to steal from the Malawian people.
In the end, we do too little to grow our economy. We do too little to make things work for everyone. And we, the citizens, have become enablers of the theft.
We applaud the mansions rising in Area 43 without asking how someone became rich so quickly, especially when there is no clear economic activity to explain such sudden wealth. We stand by while a few people ruin our country, then act surprised when South Africans chase our sons and daughters from their soil.
We, the citizens, have the power to stop corruption. But first, we must stop admiring it.
