This is day 2 for Dean Penney’s bail hearing in Supreme Court in Corner Brook.
The St. Anthony man is charged with first-degree murder in the death of his estranged wife Jennifer Hillier-Penney. He was arrested in Dec. He’s been at HMP since then.
The solar eclipse has great historical value for Burgeo. In 1766 British explorer James Cook used the total solar eclipse to help map the longitude of Newfoundland! There’s a public viewing near Eclipse Island on the wharf this afternoon.

Large crowd of mostly lobster fisherman from the west coast of the island and the northern peninsula. FFAW rep says this is a peaceful protest, standing in support with fish harvesters in St. John’s.

A large sinkhole has opened up next to the Glynmill Inn in Corner Brook.
The inn manager tells me it was first spotted at around 7:45, shortly after a heavy downpour of rain.
