We need to also please be very loud and supportive for Kendall who was violently raped by an LSU football player and bravely told her story to the world
An erasure poem of District Attorney Matthew Van Houten’s explanation for why the Cornell Seven were not criminally prosecuted. The materials sent to the prosecutor by campus police were missing Jane’s assertions that she was raped. Staggering. In this poem, I decided to omit the document to unerase Jane’s truth within it.
“Everybody has to have a torch.”
Gloria Steinem, the feminist icon who fought for gender equality, has died at 92. In a 2017 conversation with TIME, Steinem discussed the challenges facing activists then and now alongside singer and social activist Harry Belafonte.
Steinem said she wouldn’t give up her torch, arguing that the idea that there is only one torch is the problem.

I was born in 1971, the year before Gloria Steinem helped launch Ms. magazine.
It’s hard to explain to younger women what Ms. meant to those of us who grew up with it. It showed us women who were questioning the rules, challenging power, and refusing to accept that the world simply had to stay the way it was.
Gloria helped make that kind of woman visible and possible.
After Kamala Harris lost the presidential election, I was invited to Gloria’s home with a small group of women. We were angry, exhausted, and trying to figure out what came next.
By then, Gloria had spent more than half a century doing this: bringing women together in her home to talk, organize, strategize, argue, and figure out how to keep going.
And she was still doing exactly that until just before she died. Because Gloria understood something fundamental about women and activism: movements are built in living rooms.
Women activists of my generation inherited so much from Gloria Steinem: a world in which a woman allowed themselves to be outspoken, ambitious, political, angry, strategic, and powerful.
There is a direct line from women like Gloria, who insisted on taking up space when women were expected to stay quiet, to women like me who were able to build organizations, lead movements, and demand change.
Gloria Steinem helped make my activism and the activism of millions of women possible. Not just by breaking barriers herself, but by creating space for generations of women to come through behind her.
A 90-year-old woman emailed me this week. She told me she was raped by her doctor 60 years ago.
"A woman lawyer told me not to prosecute him because I would be dragged through the mud," she explained.
I get emails like this almost every day. These women aren't asking me for anything, except to acknowledge them and their pain.
They want the world to understand that they have been silenced by a system in which men say "eight years ago?" as if there is a deadline that expired for their trauma.

It feels like a good day to remind the country that FDR raised taxes on the rich significantly & in doing so got us Medicare, Social Security, a jobs program and built an American middle class. #BigUglyBill https://t.co/8pQClEG2gX
Senator Mike Lee pretended he was on the phone to avoid being confronted by @TinaSmithMN after he mocked assassination victims this weekend. She made sure he heard what she had to say.
