Fix Triceps Tendinitis 👇
If you’re experiencing pain in the back of the elbow, it’s critical to first determine whether it’s triceps tendinitis or posterior elbow impingement, a commonly missed diagnosis in throwers.
⚾️ Triceps Tendinitis: Pain with resisted elbow extension
⚾️ Posterior Impingement: Pain at end-range elbow extension, often due to bone on bone compression (Can be reproduced passively)
If confirmed as triceps tendinitis, addressing tendon stiffness and fluid accumulation can significantly improve symptoms and function.
What Causes Triceps Tendon Pain?
Overuse and overload lead to increased cross-sectional area of the triceps tendon due to fluid buildup (think swollen tendon).
When irritated, the tendon pulls in hydrophilic molecules (proteoglycans & glycosaminoglycans), which increase internal pressure and reduce stiffness. (This just means the tendon is not as strong in this state)
This swelling restricts blood flow, creating hypoxia in tenocytes, leading to pain sensitivity—especially with fast or forceful elbow extension (The tendon is very sensitive)
How to Fix It: Triceps Tendon Loading Protocol
1️⃣ Long-Duration, Low-Intensity Isometrics (Tendon Health & Pain Relief)
20-30% MVC (max voluntary contraction) for 30-45 seconds helps exude excess fluid, reduce pressure, and lower pain sensitivity.
Perform 2-3 sessions per day, spaced 6-8 hours apart.
2️⃣ High-Intensity Isometrics (Tendon Stiffness & Strength)
Once pain subsides, progress to 3-6 second holds at 70%+ MVC to restore stiffness and improve force absorption.
Perform 2-4x per week, avoiding high-load days before throwing or pressing.
3️⃣ Nutritional Support
15g collagen + 50mg vitamin C 1 hour before loading can enhance collagen synthesis and improve tendon remodeling.
