Another common congenital heart defect is atrial septal defect (ASD). According to the American Heart Association, “Children with an ASD often have no symptoms. [...] Over time, usually many years, this may cause permanent damage to the lung blood vessels.”

According to the American Heart Association, a ventricular septal defect (VSD) is the most common congenital heart defect. VSDs occur in about 2-7% of all live births and account for approximately 20% of all CHDs.
