Authors: Philip Howard ("Not Accountable"), Jennifer Murtazashvili ("Informal Order and the State in Afghanistan"), Edmund Phelps ("My Journeys in Economic Theory") and Paul Romer (Professor of Economics at NYU) talked about government bureaucracies and how to hold them accountable. This discussion was part of an all-day conference held at Columbia University in New York City.

A wealthy friend (CEO) told me once that he didn't mind paying taxes if only the government was more efficient. What I discovered in this talk was, one can start small to bring about needed changes to the administrative state with its many layers of bureaucracy.

Suggested steps, based on evidence, are empower more people to make decisions and don't forget those at the lower rungs on the ladder because they need empowerment too. Give people the space to fail instead of refusing to recognize that failure is a part of learning and growth. A failure free state is a false one.

It's clear that too many people have become adverse to making decisions for fear of making bad decisions. This helps no one and makes it harder on the people under them who need better leadership to do their jobs well.

Surely we can and should do better.
