US Marines Aid a Wounded Japanese Soldier on Okinawa (1945) 🇺🇸🇯🇵
Personnel of the U.S. 6th Marine Division were filmed assisting a severely wounded Japanese soldier who emerged from a subterranean tunnel during the Battle of Okinawa.
As Marines cleared the island's vast network of caves and fortified positions, they signaled to hold fire while Navy corpsmen immediately provided medical treatment to the exhausted prisoner.
With Japanese surrender remaining exceptionally rare throughout the Pacific War, scenes like these offered a remarkable glimpse of humanity amid one of the bloodiest campaigns of World War II.
