Here is my own opinion, and I’ve been standing on it for more than a decade before Messi won the World Cup:

Messi was initially ahead of Ronaldo, then Ronaldo clawed it back and they were evenly matched. When Ronaldo did the Tripple and won the Euros, he got ahead. After then, Messi won the COPA and the World Cup. Which gave him a clear lead.

We still have an open window: They’ll be tied, with the rest subject to preference if Ronaldo wins the World Cup, even from the bench. That’s because Ronaldo has one more UCL (two if we consider actual contributions) and he is the top scorer of all time.
