@vrkurosawa@ProfofEvil I don't have a horse in that race, to be honest. I just don't read enough Batman to feel comfortable saying anything definitive about him or how he should be. But I dislike it when aspects of Clark's character are changed to suit him and their dynamic.
@MoyeeYee I have sort of thought about this as an idea for a fanfic tbh. I don’t think movie Lex ever had a reason to be in Smallville based on what Gunn has said about his backstory but he was a public figure and I wonder if Clark had thoughts on him before their first encounter.
@chirpi_575@repipuhoney@LionKudo The idea that he’s irredeemable doesn’t really have anything to do with who Lex inherently is as a character, it’s how the fandom likes to position him in relation to other characters. It’s really clear when you see how the fandom talks about the villains, it’s not logical
@Itzel_return@narmbo I think Lex's methods are bad, and he has no healthy way to express that care, but he does care about certain people and it's what you described. You can't reduce it down to him having good intentions the whole time or being an emotionless monster, neither is true.
@Itzel_return@narmbo admitted his shame at how he treated her. I have thoughts on Lena II's storyline and how the portrayal of Lex as a character shifted so much over it. I think that made it incoherent, and I'm dissatisfied with how it ended so abruptly with so little development after his change.
@narmbo Yeah his current relationship with his daughter is the true continuation of his relationship with his sister + nephew in pre-crisis and I'm tired of pretending it's not
@luthwhores People will complain about fanon and they’ll say what they think is in-character and it will literally just be wrong about the characters… why does this happen so often?
@narmbo Yet another thing where Maggin was commenting on and superior to the silver age because they LOVED putting Lex in nuclear family situations to show he was "reformed"...
@SDagoth4290 I was speaking in the context of fandom and people trying to police or criticise other fanworks without having full context themselves. But yeah the concept of mischaracterisation kind of falls apart even faster once you’re talking about official versions
We’re really in a moment where people care more about how healthy and liberatory and “correct” their ships are than about creativity and being in a community in fandom.
