17th June, GRH. We have a range of great internal and external speakers, a trainee prize for oral/ poster presentation which is great for the CV (please send abstracts by 1st June!)
And thanks to our resident-led presentations showcasing some high quality work from the region.
Keep an eye on our website for more meeting details including future obstetric anaesthesia updates from the region and events https://t.co/iyzuCIB7ii
A highly enjoyable day at #COMMA2025 yesterday. We were lucky to be joined by some incredible speakers and some high quality talks.
Thank you to Katie Donovan-Adekanmbi, Lisa Kirk, Helen Brar, @godfrey_esther and Phil Riddell for their time and contributions.
Offering her patient experience of inadequate anaesthesia is @SusannaStanford
“Start with the assumption that the block ISN’T working and prove to yourself that it IS”
Test the block AND believe the patient.
Technical and non-technical skills are equally important and we, as anaesthetists, can have an impact through:
- ergonomics
- tocolysis
- PPH management
- maintaining communication with a mother and her birth partner
A super interesting and enlightening presentation!
There’s no post-lunchtime dip in energy here, as @krcornthwaite speaks to us about the MDT approach to managing impacted fetal head at Caesarean section.
Original and relevant topics including:
* The effect and management of anaphylaxis in pregnancy
* Ethnic differences in maternity healthcare across Bristol
* Major haemorrhage in uterine leiomyeoma
* RA bracelets to monitor recovery from neuraxial procedures
But also good to know that there are things we do well here in the UK…! 🤰
Vasopressor use, patient experiences and teamwork…
Thank you @DGPLuther for such a balanced insight into both systems ⚖️
Specifically…
1. 18G Tuohy needles create fewer dural punctures and fewer PDPHs than 16G - a no brainer?!
2. CSE as standard for labour analgesia vs epidural alone… probably better, but would need a change in culture within many NHS departments
3. CI-PCEA… the dream?!
CoMMA is back!!
We’re delighted to welcome so many of you from around the region to the Redwood Education Centre at Gloucester! We’re excited to learn about all things obstetric anaesthesia!

Repeated points that we heard earlier in the Obstetrics session…
- Thiopental use in emergency GA LSCS still high despite NAP5 data and the risk of AAGA
- Hugely increased risk to pregnant women of black, Asian and mixed ethnic origins

Are we a Cinderella subspecialty?
Should we be making the same marginal gains as other anaesthesia specialties to improve our practice?
For example, more routine use of videolaryngoscopy? @noolslucas says yes!
