Critics are bashing these rusty-looking US Marine Corps F-35Cs on the carrier deck.

The “rust” does not affect the jet’s structure or operations.

It is not structural corrosion. The airframe is aluminum, titanium, and carbon composites — none of which rust. The brown streaks are surface oxidation of iron ferrite particles in the outermost radar-absorbent material (RAM) coating, caused by salt air, humidity, jet blast, and carrier conditions.

Official assessments from the F-35 Joint Program Office and Lockheed Martin confirm the discoloration stays limited to the coating surface and does not compromise integrity or performance.

Pre-service testing showed radar signature remained essentially unchanged after heavy simulated wear. A revised top-coat formula now prevents the discoloration on new jets and is applied to existing ones during maintenance.

The aircraft stays fully operational.

Iran's state-run Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA) has published this photograph purportedly showing a tanker with its aft section engulfed in flames.

According to IRNA, the incident occurred northeast of Khasab, Oman, the same general area referenced in a United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) advisory issued earlier after a tanker reported hearing an explosion in close proximity to the vessel.

At this time, the IRNA report remains unverified. However, the reported location closely aligns with the UKMTO advisory, and the image was first published approximately 30 minutes after the UKMTO issued its warning. No official confirmation has yet been provided regarding the identity of the vessel or the cause of the incident.

The Qatar-owned LNG carrier AL AREESH has twice reached the U.S. naval blockade line at the entrance to the Gulf of Oman and is now loitering along it in a north-south pattern.

AIS data from MarineTraffic shows that after transiting the Strait of Hormuz outbound on 29 July via Iran’s traffic separation scheme, she closed the line, reversed into the Gulf, and has returned — now loitering north-south along it.

As a Qatari-owned LNG carrier, she falls outside CENTCOM’s stated blockade scope (commercial traffic supporting Iran)

Whether U.S. forces are holding it or the ship is simply awaiting routing, clearance, or operator instructions cannot be determined from AIS data alone.

In Early July the LNG tanker AL AREESH (IMO 9325697) loaded Qatar’s first LNG cargo at Ras Laffan, then transited the Iranian-designated northern shipping lane through the Strait of Hormuz and entered the Gulf of Oman yesterday.

U.S. forces have potentially interdicted the vessel today, blocking its continued passage to Pakistan for likely employing the Iran-guided route rather than the U.S.-designated corridor.
