Inspired by 82-0 but for League of Legends esports.

@drewlevin Hey @drewlevin, just got this when closing the game (not dodging). I didn't even play an autofilled game today. Is this some UX/UI mistake, or does the system know my next game I'm going to play autofill?
five stack league on voice remains undefeated, W @jynxzi for organizing, big congrats to the winners, and thank you to everyone for the backlog of clips to watch after long day of meetings
The future of esports will not be found in sports, with even sports leaving that behind.
Esports keeps dressing itself up like traditional sports; the jerseys, structured pro competitions (or worse, franchise leagues), the commentators in suits and broadcasts looking like the Premier League or NBA. I've said it all before; for years, the industry has believed that the way to be taken seriously is to look more like sports.
But isn't it ironic that sports itself is moving away from that model. Kings League and Baller League are not built on tradition, they are built on entertainment. They have turned football into a spectacle that lives as much on TikTok as it does on the pitch. Drafts become storylines, creators become main characters and rules are created with engagement. The match is just one piece of a much bigger show. Football in general has become hugely unsustainable with the vicious cycle of higher player salaries leading to clubs being forced to play more matches and tournaments, and the bubble of TV rights looking ripe for explosion, because who under 30 can afford a £80 Sky package?
Formula 1 is another example. Drive to Survive did more to grow its audience than any set of race results ever could. It turned faceless drivers going round and round into personalities, created narratives and brought the sports to the entertainment forefront. It's as much about the winner on Sunday as it is about the drama that lives off track.
Sports is shifting forward, because it has to. Younger audiences do not just want competition, they want culture and authenticity, they want formats that work on social media, narratives that feel alive and entertainment-first products.
Meanwhile, esports is stuck copying the past renditions of sports. We polish our broadcasts, we push the sports narrative of trophies and titles. This leads to weak loyalty and engagement. We are borrowing from a model that even sports no longer sees as the future. All the while esports should, and has the opportunity, to lead the way.
Esports was born in digital culture, on forums and LAN cafes and Twitch chat, but it has spent the last decade trying to professionalize into something it never was. Instead of leaning into the chaos, the creators, the community, we have tried to retrofit a model built for an audience that does not exist here. The result is that sports is borrowing from gaming to stay relevant, while gaming is stuck imitating sports’ past.
If esports feels stale right now, maybe this is why. Because the model it is chasing is already being left behind. The question is not how esports can become more like sports, but how it can create entertainment that feels authentic to gaming, the same way Kings League feels authentic to today's world and Drive to Survive feels authentic to F1.
Thoughts? (:
Looking for jobs in multiple areas since Esports is currently very harsh this year and unreliable. 🚨
Full/Part-time, also looking to invest in good projects and partnerships for my stream if I'm able to shift into it more often.
If you know anyone, please hit me up 🙏
