Our man Alex—the Indy guy on the other side of the Pacific—picked up this reproduction of the original Japanese Raiders of the Lost Ark poster at the Lucas Museum reception opening.

The design itself is incredibly cool, but what makes this poster especially fascinating is how clearly it reflects the Japanese film market of the early 1980s.

Just look at it: executive producer George Lucas and director Steven Spielberg are featured even more prominently than Indy himself.

At IJ CON, hosted by INDIANA JAPAN this past May, we invited Mr. Omori and other members of the team who led the original Japanese marketing campaign to share firsthand stories about how they introduced Raiders—and the character of Indiana Jones—to Japanese audiences.

One thing they talked about was the extraordinary power of the name “Spielberg.”

Today, the Japanese box office is dominated by domestic films, roughly 70/30 over foreign films. Back then, it was almost exactly the opposite. Foreign movies ruled the Japanese box office, and in that era, the name Spielberg carried enormous weight.

And of course, the same was true of Lucas, who had just given the world Star Wars.

The simple fact that these two geniuses had joined forces to make a new movie was already a huge event in Japan—even before audiences knew what the movie itself had in store for them.

That’s why this poster is more than just a beautiful piece of Raiders artwork.

It’s a historical artifact from the golden age of foreign cinema in Japan—and to those of us in Japan who still love foreign movies today, it shines like a genuine treasure.

To borrow Indy’s words:

“It belongs in a museum!”

And now, decades later, this very piece of history is being sold at a museum created by the man who gave Indiana Jones to the world—George Lucas himself.

How perfect is that?
