IITs used to be prestigious campuses where only hardworking, academically bright students gained admission. The syllabus was so demanding that students barely had time for anything beyond academics.

How did people with so much time for activism and politics suddenly start getting into IITs?

It's time to make IITs great again. Scrap all humanities and similar nonsensical courses. What's the use of such courses anyway? They mostly make students woke, Naxalite and anti-national.
