In 2006, Georgia increased Life sentences from 14 to 30 years, and the parole board has required people to serve more time on those sentences each year since. Black people, poor people, women, and trans people charged with homicide often serve disproportionately longer sentences.
ACSP partnered with @IgnitingHopeGA and @gcadv to research disparities in conviction, sentencing, & parole outcomes for people prosecuted for homicide in Fulton County as part of a larger research initiative examining these issues in the state of Georgia. https://t.co/iZzJZDQGax
The Survivor Justice Act passed in the GA Senate today. Finally, legislation that rekindles hope for many I've done time with still serving ridiculous sentences for self-defense & surviving! It's been 10+ years in the making @IgnitingHopeGA & @CommunityATL but we're almost there.
While Georgia-focused, folks in other states will find some constitutional and federal resources helpful.

Today is special. As we prepare to launch ACSP's Toolkits platform, directly-impacted people are getting early access & giving feedback. Keeping the community in control is what makes the research & resourcing we do so effective.
Be part of that solution: https://t.co/xI6ptZ0NTG
Join us for a community call this evening at 6:30pm ET. We'll be talking about our attorney review database and giving y'all an exclusive sneak peek at our new Toolkits platform. It'll be virtual (Zoom). DM us for the deets!
We need your help building up the ACSP Attorney Reviews database! If you've been impacted by the criminal system we want to hear about the representation you received.
Public defender or paid attorney, trial/plea or post-conviction, awesome or awful, your input may be the trusted piece of advice for the next person or family faced with the difficult representation decisions surrounding a criminal accusation or conviction.
