@ctrnuleadership founder Eddie Ellis' Letter to Our Friends: "We reaffirm our right to be recognized as human beings. If we cannot persuade you to refer to us and think of us as people, all our other efforts at reform and change are seriously compromised."

This morning I'm at John Marshall Law School for my beautiful, amazing, persistent partner @lucirh's swearing into the GA State Bar. She has overcome more than most to get here, persevering because she knows how important the path she is blazing will be for others. Congrats baby.
In 2006, Georgia increased Life sentences from 14 to 30 years, and the parole board has required people to serve more time on those sentences each year since. Black people, poor people, women, and trans people charged with homicide often serve disproportionately longer sentences.
Now accomplished journalist Chris Blackwell calls in from WA state prison. "Covid made us the investigative jounalists... it allowed me the chance to educate society, and it allowed me the chance to humanize incarcerated people. It was a chance to recapture our voices."
At a panel on prison journalism, Juan Moreno Haines, Editor in Chief of @solitarywatch is patched in from a prison in WA. "The idea is to get stories out from solitary confinement across the nation, hopefully to get policy passed to end the practice."
Amber Bray calls in next and discusses her role as Editor in Chief of the CCWF Paper Trail. "Bring able to tell our own stories has been huge." The computer lady interrupts her every so often: "This call is being monitored and recorded." #JustImpact2025
๐: Because of Trumpโs federal grant freeze, homeless services providers like @PartnersForHOME have been cut off from funding.
PFH can't even log into HUD's online grant disbursement system.
More to discuss tomorrow, @waberosescott?
Today I was granted access to speak with incarcerated firefighters.
They told me:
- they hadnโt showered in 5 days
- they were not provided regularly meals
- they were working 24 hours in a row
- they feel under appreciated and underpaid
I'm so proud of what we've built at @CommunityATL. The caliper of (often the very) people who've supported me enable us to do the same for others. And we won't stop until everyone is free... from cages, discrimination, & racist oppression that built & runs the criminal system.
Listening to incredible public comment in support of @PADatlanta at the city council meeting happening now. "I never thought I would be standing in front of you guys, owning my own business... the help of PAD opened up endless opportunity for me." https://t.co/z5AQMWRRiL
@nowhabersham repeatedly and incorrectly reports Sherry Joyce was serving life for murder, which is untrue. Reporting her charges as the only information about her is irrelevant & disgraceful. She'd been in prison since 1991, should have paroled long ago, should still be alive.

Last Saturday at Lee Arrendale State Prison in Alto, GA, Sherry Joyce was killed. Staff disregarded/covered up a statement filed by eyewitness Haylee Reed and lied to the rest of the prison population, calling her death a hanging, or a heart attack. Sunday, Reed was also killed.
Also common: "You gonna make us sit here and wait all day?" They can lawfully detain you, but only long enough to conduct their investigation and issue a citation. If they ask, "Do you want to wait for the drug dog?" Simply repeat, "I do not consent to a search of my vehicle."
Sign up for our 9/24 community event, DEFEND YOUR RIGHTS. We'll be having a community conversation about the 4th Amendment - what police can and cannot do when stopping you or coming to your home. https://t.co/W9YYVdrUb6
Often, a dog sniff is threatened to force consent. A K9 officer may conduct an "open air sniff," and if the dog alerts, that is probable cause. Always film the dog and the handler- if they signal or command the dog to alert, you want to catch that on camera.
We wish we had better news. But as of now, #MarcellusWilliams is still scheduled to be executed by Missouri tonight at 6 p.m. central for a crime he is totally innocent of. โ
Donโt stop sharing his story. Itโs not too late to save an innocent life.โ https://t.co/eofSDX66tC
You do not have to engage in small talk. You don't have to answer any questions. That's consent too. Where are you coming from? None of their business. "With all respect officer, I do not have to talk to you."
EXECUTION DAY! #FreddieOwens is set to be executed today however his co defendant said he lied and Freddie was not the one who committed the crime. It is not too late to call @henrymcmaster (803) 734-2100 and urge him to halt the execution.
