Supported by @CompassAgAu and Icon Agriculture, WaterSmart Dams Site Host James and Melita Jefferies, Duranillin, WA shared their trial results in the recently published GGA - WaterSmart Dam Case Study booklet - see case study #8.
James noted in the case study; “we are dryland farmers and water security is absolutely critical for us to continue to run livestock".
🔍The results revealed: Between August 2023 and July 2024, the Jefferies’ lower dam lost 2.6ML of water, 1.44m loss due to evaporation and 0.65m through seepage.

💧 WaterSmart Dams – Making Dams Work Again has brought Western Australian growers together to tackle one of agriculture’s biggest challenges: reliable on-farm water supplies and aims to equips farmers with knowledge and water planning tools to make confident water investment decisions.
This case study booklet shares the insights from Western Australian growers, from four grower group project partners from within the GGA Network, including @CompassAgAu, Darkan; @SouthernDirtYF, Kojonup; @MADFIG14, Merredin; and the @FGroup57815, Jerramungup.
💡Growers trialed practical solutions including renovating existing dams and catchments, building new dams, and implementing evaporation control methods.
💡 Each case study shares the growers insights into what worked, what didn’t, and what they learned along the way.

Feedlotting lambs has always been a low-margin, high-volume game. 🐑
Yes, there are windows of strong returns—but only if you nail timing, efficiency & risk management. Let’s unpack the realities (and opportunities) 👇
West Midlands growers, it's time to get harvest ready!

Water security is critical for WA farmers. The #WaterSmartDams project trialed practical solutions like evaporation covers, drainage & dam sealing to boost on-farm resilience. Backed by @FDFund & @DPIRDWA, led by @GGA_WA & @uwanews.
Discussing the IT Canola system with Tim Tresize and Alec Smith from Frankland Rural. Forward planning & paddock preparation with weed control is essential for implementing IT into the system, but if you get it right, it has the best top end yield potential.
When discussing employing staff - know your award, differs depending on business structure. Workers comp non-negotiable & no wiggle room if incident occurs. Contracts a good idea even if not always required. Must always treat staff “fairly”. Look into Management Liability Cover.
We as employers are required by law to provide a workplace that is as safe as possible… identify the risks, put real changes in place. The safety plan shouldn’t be seperate to the job, should be part of how you do it.
Lawyer, Rob Greig talking on employment legalities & safety. Key messages - focus on the critical risks (fatality, lost limb, head injury) and mange them well. If possible, implement and “engineering control” rather than a procedure - ie. guards on machinery over “don’t touch it”
